The flavors of fall are abundant in our local restaurant scene. Our award-winning local chefs are signaling autumn with creative acumen – whether the menu item is a stand-by or a seasonal introduction. Here are five flavors we enjoyed recently that we can’t recommend to you highly enough. Get out there and take advantage of sunshine filled lunch breaks and drinks on the patio while the weather is just right – and celebrate the season and our local chefs who make it taste oh so good.

Caramel Popcorn Macaron from La Brioche Patisserie

La Brioche is a true artisan patisserie and an unexpected find in a city our size, according to author and photographer Ally Phillips, who’s photo recently graced the cover of Food Network magazine. Try any of their hand made desserts after a quiche or sandwich from their breakfast or lunch menu. And take a dozen of these caramel popcorn macaron to savor and share as you see fit.

Parmesan Burger at Local 463

Chef Derek Emerson has been serving up some of Jackson’s favorite food for years now, and the Parmesan Burger is no exception. Find this burger oozing with caramelized onions and mushrooms atop a patty groaning under the weight of melty fried mozzarella and red sauce. It’s like Chicken Parm on a bun – but better. Find this beauty hiding at Local 463 in Madison county.

Autumn Pear Salad at Seafood R’evolution

Yes, a salad can be good enough to make a list that also includes a sinfully filling Parmesan Burger AND a Meatloaf Panini (don’t skip ahead just yet!). First of all, this new autumn addition at Seafood R’evolution is as beautiful as it is divine. Grilled radicchio is perfectly caramelized and sweet – yet still slightly bitter and crisp. Crunchy pears, candied walnuts and pomegranate create a textural and flavor of a well composed symphony. No improvisational jazz on this plate. I added grilled chicken for extra protein, and it was perfectly seasoned and prepared – surprisingly tender and moist. As a whole, we just couldn’t quit eating until the plate was clean. Full of superfoods, you can just consider it penance for the sins you’ll commit eating the rest of this list. Go enjoy this $11 lunch salad before it disappears.

Meatloaf Panini at Crazy Cat Eat Up

Bring your appetite to Crazy Cat Eat Up and this big boy sandwich can take care of you. It features their house made meatloaf (which is incredible all by itself) topped with cheese, roasted peppers and a honey mustard sauce. If you haven’t yet visited their new location in Canton Mart Square, you need to get over there and check out the evolved version of Crazy Cat Bakery.

De Pato Tacos at Babalu Tacos & Tapas

We’ve been what you’d call “regulars” at Babalu in Fondren since the week it opened, and, honestly, I’m mad at myself. Recently, I tried Babalu’s version of a duck taco for the very first time, and I’m not order anything else except that for a while into the future. The duck is so flavorful and bright that it is really the star of any mixed taco plate. Try it with a Baba-Rita or Sangria for a very civilized treat. Bonus points if you enjoy it on their very civilized patio.

Admit it, you haven’t given fall food enough attention. Quit settling for pumpkin spice lattes and get out there and dine a little. Limited seasonal menu options abound and reservations are bountiful before the holiday rush. Taste test your way through our punch list and then share your top picks with us in our inbox, here.
